COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course offers a theoretical and critical approach to the social and cultural phenomena that structure community life, understanding design as a discipline deeply rooted in the analysis of the sociocultural context. Drawing on the content of Social Sciences and Communication Theory, students acquire conceptual and methodological tools to understand how identities, social relations, collective discourses, and the visual languages ​​circulating in contemporary society are constructed.

This perspective stems from learning outcome KM01, which aims to foster the ability to compare data from specialized sources to interpret social, cultural, political, and economic phenomena in relation to the accompanying technological and scientific changes. The course enables students to establish critical connections between these phenomena and their impact on design, whether as a generator of meaning, a communication tool, or an agent of social transformation.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Compare data extracted from specialized information sources to define social, cultural, political and economic phenomena and relate them to the technological and scientific evolution of a community.
  • Define the use of methodologies specific to the social sciences to establish the relationship that exists between the artistic and cultural tradition of a community and its technological evolution.
  • Describe, using qualitative and quantitative methods, the impact of the relationship between the structural behaviors of a society and the definition of design strategies.
  • Identify relevant data that define the characteristics of a social group based on the consultation of specialized sources.
  • Recognize, from a critical perspective, the social narratives constructed around the concept of transversal sustainability (Environmental, social, economic and political)
  • Identify the social function of design as a discipline that aims to generate narratives based on inclusivity in general and gender discourse in particular.
