KNITWEAR SURFACE DESIGN

ESDI’s Knitwear Surface Design course introduces students to textile surface design through hands-on experience with flat knitting machines. It’s a practical programme focused on experimenting with textures, reliefs, and structures applied to fashion design.

Introduction

Knitting is one of the most versatile and innovative areas within contemporary textile design. This course offers a practical introduction to using the flat knitting machine as a creative tool, exploring the possibilities of knitting beyond its traditional function, with a focus on surface research and material experimentation.

Through hands-on work with machinery and materials, students will learn to construct complex textile structures, develop textures, and generate visual effects applicable to garment design. The course fosters a creative and technical approach to knitwear, understanding weaving as an expressive language within the design process.

Contents

The programme is divided into 4 content blocks that will guide you step by step through the entire process:

  • 1. THE KNITTING MACHINE AND THE YARN.
    Introduction to the operation of the flat knitting machine and the behavior of different yarns in the creation of knitted fabrics.

  • 2. STRUCTURES WITH ONE AND TWO FOUNDATIONS.
    Learning basic and combined structures to understand how textile surfaces with different levels of complexity are constructed.

  • 3. CREATION OF VARIOUS EFFECTS, RELIEFS AND SURFACES
    Experimentation with technical resources to generate textures, reliefs, openwork structures, and finishes applied to fashion design.

  • 4. MATERIALS: YARNS AND SWATCHES
    Selection and analysis of yarns, materials, and samples to develop coherent textile proposals with creative value.

  • 6. SELECTION OF MATERIALS AND USE OF COLOR ACCORDING TO THE DESIGN.

    Exploration of threads, fabrics and color combinations according to the aesthetic intention of the project.

  • 7. FINAL PRESENTATION OF THE SAMPLES.

    Preparation and presentation of final pieces that integrate the techniques and concepts worked on.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course is aimed at students and professionals in the field of fashion design and technical profiles within the sector who want to get started in knitwear design and expand their technical and creative knowledge. It is especially suitable for those looking to experiment with new technical languages within surface design.

It is also aimed at creatives interested in deepening their knowledge of knitwear as a field of specialization, incorporating flat knitting machines into their design process. A prior interest in textiles and material experimentation is recommended.

Methodology

The course is based on a practical methodology focused on learning through direct experimentation with the flat knitting machine and textile materials. The sessions combine technical explanations with applied exercises that allow participants to understand the behavior of the stitch and its creative possibilities.

Students develop their own samples throughout the course, exploring structures, textures, and yarn combinations. Teacher support fosters individual learning progress, encouraging research and the application of knitwear in contemporary design projects.

ESDI provides students with its workshops and professional equipment, but each participant must bring their own personal materials:

  • Pattern making rules
