ESDI inaugurated the exhibition Inhabiting Modernity, a showcase that offers a contemporary perspective on Catalan design from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The opening event, open to all ESDI staff, took place on Thursday, December 4, in the entrance and main hall of the centre and was led by Carles Pibernat, who provided context on the content and significance of the exhibition.
The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between ESDI and Fènix Originals and highlights a period of great creative effervescence, in which functionality, material quality, and aesthetic sensitivity profoundly transformed the way people inhabited and understood objects and spaces, both domestic and collective.
During the opening session, particular emphasis was placed on the educational value of the project and its ability to create connections between past and present. Inhabiting Modernity goes beyond displaying iconic 20th-century pieces, inviting visitors to reflect on the principles of modern design and their relevance in today’s context.
Fènix Originals, dedicated to the research, recovery, and restoration of original 20th-century pieces, helps preserve objects that are part of cultural heritage and the narrative of modernity, bringing this legacy closer to new generations of designers.
The exhibition can be visited until December 17 in the entrance and corridor of ESDI. Inhabiting Modernity is presented as an invitation to look to the past in order to better understand the present and continue building the future of design through a critical, conscious, and sensitive perspective.
