11 Jun Pilot test of the Pill-it project begins, the new method of medication administration promoted by I3PT and ESDi
Parc Taulí Hospital Universitario consumes 1,303,300 plastic cups annually for the administration of oral medication alone. Pill-it was born from the environmental and clinical need to reduce plastic waste in hospitals as much as possible. To this end, the Institute for Research and Innovation Parc Taulí (I3PT) and the School of Design of Sabadell (ESDi) have worked together in the design and development of a container that is part of the patient room and can be easily cleaned, thus eliminating the excessive use of plastic cups. The goal of Pill-it is to reduce the use of plastics and waste in hospitals by changing the method of administering oral medication to patients.
The pilot test began on June 1 at the Chronic Patient Unit of the Parc Taulí University Hospital Complex. The study aims to validate the first prototype of Pill-it from the point of view of the following aspects:
- Safety in medication administration
- Usability for professionals and patients / family members
- Adequacy of device size in relation to the different hospital structures
- Easy to keep the device clean
- Patient management with this device
Pill-it is an innovative project that positions Parc Taulí Hospital Universitario as a sustainable and responsible hospital with the waste it generates. In addition, Pill-it can be scaled to other hospitals with the same problems.
