Syllabus

Estructure

The total number of credits of the Double Degree in Design + Bachelor in Smart Design is 286 ECTS, to be taken in 4 academic years. The curriculum is structured in 240 ECTS for the Undergraduate Degree in Design (60 ECTS per year) + 46 ECTS for the Bachelor in Smart Design (between 10 and 14 per year).

1st academic year

Fundamentals of Digital Culture

This course provides a critical analysis of some of the factors that influence design, art and technology. It also includes in-depth analysis of selected readings. The topics chosen cover key issues that affect digital culture.

Credits: 4 ECTS.
Lecturers: Victoria Sacco + Daniella Savalli.

Smart Objects & Digital Fabrication

The goal of this course is to pique students’ curiosity regarding the incorporation of new technologies into the design process, given that the links between information and the material world are getting stronger and stronger. Information is now a key part of product proposals and the boundaries between the materials used for designing products are becoming increasingly blurred.

Credits: 6 ECTS.
Lecturer: Agustina Palazzo.

2nd academic year

Dynamic Data Programming.

This course looks at various programming languages applied to the design of interactive applications and websites, exploring their key technical features and their scope in the design field. The course also delves into the online documentation of projects and student’s portfolio and store creation through resource-sharing.

Credits: 6 ECTS.
Lecturer: Iván Marino.

3D Animation and Holography.

Introduction to 3D animation and holography. We will study the basic science behind holography and will learn various techniques of what are commonly called holograms, but that are in fact optical illusions.

Credits: 4 ECTS.
Lecturer: Agustina Palazzo.

Digital Creation.

The common thread is the use and handling of digital information from the designer’s standpoint. The course shows the creative scope offered by emerging communication technologies, and how the relationships between machine components and programming can be exploited for design purposes, as well as their scope for human interaction.

Credits: 4 ECTS.
Lecturer: Agustina Palazzo.

3rd academic year

Smart Design.

This course takes a critical and practical approach to smart design objects with a specific focus on conversational interfaces and Artificial Intelligence. The course delves into the existing types of AI in the different design areas: from personal shopper AIs to Domotic solutions, shedding light on their technical grounding and their scope in the Design field. The course also poses hands-on practical exercises including programming a chatbot based on the student’s field of interest.

Credits: 6 ECTS.
Lecturer: Iván Marino.

Creative Interaction.

The student will delve into topics such as creative coding for interactive graphics and sound, interfaces, data management and visualisation, digital communications and IoT. A series of contents that will enhance the capabilities of the student’s projects in the interaction between humans and devices, as well as between the devices themselves and the network. By visualising and interacting with the virtual environment, students will allow their projects to function not only on their own, but also outside the physical device.

Credits: 6 ECTS.
Lecturer: Javier Albo.

4th academic year

Smart Projects.

The course aims to empower students to envision, design and prototype their ideas by putting into practice the knowledge and motivations acquired during the Bachelor’s degree. They will use their skills in computational design, digital fabrication, hardware, software, electronic prototyping and coding, and they will deepen their knowledge in these fields to develop a final Smart Design project.

Credits: 6 ECTS.
Lecturer: Javier Albo.

Materials Innovation.

This subject presents an overview of the existing innovation in materials applicable to the different design disciplines: product, interior, graphic, audiovisual and fashion. Students will conduct applied research to design their own projects focusing on the innovative, sustainable and creative use and crafting of materials.

Credits: 4 ECTS.
